Week in Review
Sometimes it feels like we pack the most stuff into these 4 day weeks. Shoo!
On Tuesday, we saw the jump rope team from ACE kick off our Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser.

On the same day, we kicked off our fictional narrative unit!
The kids are having a BLAST with this writing unit. We started by talking about how great we are at being storytellers already because we have ALL pretended to be someone else at recess, playing dress up, playing with a sibling, etc. On day 1, we had a writer's theater and just had fun pretending to tell a story.

The problem? None of it made sense! Why would you have a librarian riding a unicorn just to enter a city and say, "Hi!"? So on Day 2, we talked about how characters have to match the setting!

We did a gallery walk of settings like castles, haunted houses, and sports events. While at each setting, the kids had a chance to include some characters they might find there. The kids mastered the understanding that the character and setting MUST go together! So...we did another writer's theater and the results were SO improved.

The kids have already chosen their own settings and characters. I am so excited!

In Math, we ventured into adding 3 NUMBERS!!! Can you believe it?!

The girls above are doing the "grab, sort, add" activity. In first grade, it is SO important to keep math as concrete as possible. Plus, who doesn't love to play with cubes? They had the opportunity to grab 3 colors of cubes, sort them, and then add the numbers together. This helped them see they already knew how to add 3 numbers without even realizing it!

We also discussed strategies like making a 10 and looking for doubles. The kids did amazing (as always).

I have been blessed with a class who has astounding number sense. The picture above was taken in the middle of one of our number talks (AKA before they managed to fill up my desk with all of their answers). In a number talk, the kids are challenged to solve problems mentally and explain their thinking aloud. In this particular talk, the challenge was to use the numbers shown to make the difference equal to 2. My job is to facilitate discussion and record their thinking - not give an answer. Kids were using fingers, number lines, decomposing numbers, making a larger sum to take away a number, the list goes on and on. Your kids are WONDERFUL!

In Reading, we began to study fairy tales.
This week's fairy tale:

Kids were introduced to Point of View:
(the above poster is not mine - I somehow managed to get out of the building without snapping a picture but it gets the same point across!)

After reading the regular version of Jack and the Beanstalk on Tuesday (and identifying pronouns because first graders are awesome enough to do that), we read a different P.O.V.

To be fair, we also heard the other side:
With each text, we identified the person telling the story by using keywords in the text. On Fridays throughout this unit, we will be reading Fractured Fairytales. This year, I was unable to get my hands on one of my favorite fractured versions of Jack:
so if you see it at the library, it is worth reading!
Instead, we read another beloved character of mine:
These Little Critter books bring back all kinds of memories!

At the end of the week, we visited the 4th grader's Wax Museum. Here are some photos from that great event. The kids LOVED seeing their book buddies and siblings...and they even saw some of our African American Achievers!

Have a great week!

Websites the kids are RAVING about
There are a few sites the kids have been begging me to tell you about! Click the links below to explore (and secretly learn by having fun but shhhh...)
Reading Horizons Discovery the kids are OBSESSED with this new one. Your child's login should be their first name and last initial. (For example, mine would be: amandac) Some kiddos have nicknames so please contact me if you are having difficulty.

Brainpop Jr. is a fun, interactive site with videos, games, and activities to teach new concepts.

And here is a video from one of our movement breaks that has been requested repeatedly :)

Week in Review
This week flew by with all of our fun things planned! :)
We kicked off our week with our Valentine's Day activities!
We read this book:
and talked about what we think love means. Here are some of our answers:

Before our party got started, we continued my favorite tradition of Complimats. The kiddos begin this activity by complimenting themselves (because that's okay!) and then we write one compliment for every single person in the class.

Then...the party began! Here is a look back at some of our wild fun!

We ended the day with parfaits!
The kiddos got to choose any toppings they wanted...some of us went overboard!
Some of us weren't sure if we even liked it!

Some of us were scraping every last bit out of the cup. :)

As our week continued on, we had lots of fun in other ways!
For math, we worked on mastering the skill of telling ten more and ten less from ANY two digit number.

We each got our own hundreds chart to put in our journals AND we learned the "100s Chart Shuffle."

An easy way to practice this skill at home is to choose any number on a hundreds chart and have your kids tell you 1 more, 1 less, 10 more, or 10 less. No hundreds chart? Even better! Practice the mental strategy of counting by 10s (2, 12, 22, 32, 42, etc.) when you're riding around in the car!

By the end of the week, we were masters at this skill so we were able to create our own "torn hundreds chart" puzzles! (hopefully these made it home for you to try!)

We also got to use some of the ones I made for us to keep in a center. Of course, the kiddos said, "These are tooooooo easy, Mrs. Carney!"

We wrapped up our African American Achievers unit this week and studied a little bit about presidents for President's Day.

We used PebbleGo to study the President's job. We learned that Presidents get to decide whether to sign or veto bills. So, we decided to come up with our own bills throughout the day!
(yes, that is spilled coffee on the poster)

Then, kids chose a bill to either sign or veto.

Have a FABULOUS week!
