Week in Review
October is always such a fun time in first grade. You really begin to see students take off in their learning as our curriculum begins to go more in depth on certain topics.
Over the past 2 weeks, we have dug deep into Reading Comprehension and Parts of Speech (specifically nouns).

In Reading, we started talking about Pumpkins!
We kicked off our pumpkin study with this fun book:
You can read along with it at this link:

We talked about Spookley's character traits by comparing traits we see on the outside vs. the inside.
We also used this text to practice retelling and telling our opinion of his character traits while using text evidence!
Being in first grade, we cutesied it up a little bit with these fun pumpkin foldables.

We also read Pumpkin Pumpkin
and learned the pumpkin life cycle!

We also started a new favorite activity for part of our Morning Meeting:
Writing compliments to our friends!

In Math, we learned some new addition games.

In Writing, we've been discussing Opinions. We read one of the silliest books around:
Every year, we get into a heated discussion in first grade about whether this critter is a duck or a rabbit! The kids know I don't just accept an opinion - you have to tell me WHY! So, we split into 2 groups and the groups had to share their reasons for why they think the animal is a duck or rabbit. We used that chart to help us write our first opinion pieces!

Have a FABULOUS week!

Week in Review
Here's a quick look back at our last 2 weeks!
We begin every morning with a Morning Meeting. Each meeting begins with a greeting and last week, we learned about the silliest greeting of all: the shoe greeting!
Math has been a crazy busy geometry unit! We are wrapping it up this week but the kids have loved exploring how to compose various shapes and how to describe those shapes, too!

In Reading, we talked a lot about nonfiction texts and how diagrams are ways that authors can use pictures to help us understand. To demonstrate our understanding of this text feature, we made our own class book about how you can move..using a diagram!

We wrapped up our week making some fall decorations with our 4th grade Book Buddies!

Have a great week!
