Week in Review
I am so excited to share some of our fun happenings with you this week!
The kids have had so much fun learning about the tools mathematicians use in first grade. This part of the year is a perfect opportunity for them to show off their creativity.

We've used a lot of great books to help us understand social skills in the classroom.
This Danny series is so fun! This book is a "choose your own adventure" tale that is great for helping kids understand the power of making their own choices. We've read it twice and it cracks the kids up when he makes the "wrong" choice.
The Name Jar helped start a great conversation about how special each of our names is.

Tattle Tongue is always a great conversation starter, too. Sometimes it's tricky to tell the difference between tattling and telling!

One of their favorites, though, was My Mouth is a Volcano!
The kids helped create this poster of strategies to not interrupt (even when their words are SO important).

The kids also had the chance to show what THEY like to read at home. I loved their creativity!

We also started building our stamina for Read to Self time! We already built our stamina from 0 to 2 minutes. Our goal is 20 minutes!

Have a great week!

Week in Review
This is where you will see a fun look back at our week! Remember, if you'd like to see your child's pictures on the blog, I need your permission. You can do that by completing this form

We had a fantastic start to first grade! We've been lucky enough to enjoy sunshine every day for recess.

On our first day, we experimented with MAGIC PLAYDOH. It was amazing! Each first grader got a ball of white playdoh as we read a poem that told us if a color appeared, we'd have a great year!
The kids were PUMPED to watch it change color!

And the kids made some clever sculptures afterwards :)
By Friday, we were ready to do one of my favorite beginning of the year projects. We listened to the book Recess Queen:

We created our own versions of a recess friend to share how we can treat others with kindness at school.

We also had the chance to explore some of the math manipulatives we'll be using this year.

The kids also had a chance to learn more about me. See if your first grader can remember what these things mean!

Have a great week!

Helpful Links to Begin the Year

Hi all! The beginning of the year is a WILD time (as I'm sure you already know). Keeping this in mind, I wanted to create a hub for you to have a quick link to some important places. Many of these links will remain housed on the right side of this blog >>>

Allow me to introduce myself!

I am SO happy to have your first grader in my class for the 2019-2020 school year! This blog is going to be the central hub of EVERYTHING that goes on this school year! Now that you're here, I wanted to take a few moments to introduce myself.

My name is Amanda Carney and this is my sixth year here at Wellington Elementary. My family and I live in Versailles.

We celebrated our son, Tucker's, first birthday this summer!
He is a WILD man.
Always climbing and getting into trouble!

And he helps us take care of our sweet dog, Max.

My husband, James, and I welcomed our son, Tucker, last summer!

I graduated from Transylvania University (Go Pioneers!) and completed my Masters at University of the Cumberlands.

Here's a little bit of "fun" information about me:

I honestly believe that first grade is the best because you will see your first grader TAKE OFF in reading, writing, and math this year...without them even knowing it because it's just so stinkin' FUN!

Our Schedule

Specials Rotation
**I will update you on our rotation schedule as soon as it is finalized**

Things to Know
Please use the links at the sidebar, or the links below, to complete 3 quick forms for me.

The Volunteer Application is a mandatory form that you must complete in order to volunteer in the building. Please complete this form ASAP!

The Picture Permission Slip is a quick form that lets me know whether I have your permission to take and post pictures of your child on the classroom blog. If you scroll through this blog, you'll see that I LOVE to post pictures of the fun things we do in class each week.

The Classroom Volunteer Sign-Up Form is a form to let me know in what capacity you would like to help in the classroom. This is not a way for me to trick you into coming in every week! This is just for me to know who to call on if I find myself needing a helping hand at some point :)

Here's to a great school year!
