Week in Review
WOW what a week! Another fun week full of celebrations and we survived! (Let's face it - Mrs. Carney survived :-P) Standby for an insane amount of pictures from this week...

In reading this week, we moved away from just identifying words that helped us with our senses to identifying words that help us understand a character's feelings.
We started by listing the feelings we are familiar with and the actions we might do when we have those feelings. We used that chart to help us analyze Alexander's feelings in this popular book:

The next day, we made a FUN chart to help us think about the sights, sounds, and feelings we might feel in a haunted house with this book:

The next day, we became authors who helped to create these images and wrote our own spooky haunted house stories.

We enjoyed all sorts of fun spirit days (that Mrs. Carney forgot to take a picture of). On Thursday, it was Slipper day!

In Math, we continued working on some crucial number sense skills: Commutative Property and balancing equations.

These girls were working on the "slash" strategy to determine if two equations were equal or unequal. Mean ol' Mrs. Carney aaaaaalways requires us to provide evidence for our answers. These girls were using their tens frames to prove their equations were equal or unequal.
Can you believe first graders can even explain how they know these aren't balanced? GEEZ!
We also explained how we could tell if number sentences were true or false.

(PS - we totally crushed our real deal (assessment) on this standard).
We also LOVE making a huge mess on the carpet while we learn a new math tub.

Then...it was Friday.

We started the day with our Character Parade.

We took turns sharing about our characters on the fancy document camera.
Then it was time for the Junie B. Jamboree!

"Make a scary face for your picture." :-P

We ended our week with our Red Ribbon Assembly. Such a FUN presentation from this organization.
We were only a little excited.
Hailey was one of 16 kids at Wellington who won the chance to spray Mrs. Strange with silly string as part of a fundraiser reward!

Have a great week!!!

Week in Review
Hi everyone! Thanks for your continued patience as I get everything sent to you regarding our Junie B. Jamboree and our Conferences! We are SO excited to have visitors help us with our Jamboree this Friday. :) Here is a peek back at our week:

We are studying how to support our opinion with reasons in our writing. We got a CRAZY letter from the president:

We obviously had some very strong opinions about this. ;-)

We read this HILARIOUS book and debated whether we would trust the Pigeon to drive the bus.

David Shannon is a great author to provoke conversations in the classroom. This week, we used one of his books to debate: Can a kid ever have too many toys?

We ended the week with some VERY important opinions. Everyone identified "The Best Part of Me." I can't wait to share these pieces with you during our conferences. Here are some sneak peeks at the best parts of us.

We used our context clues to help us understand unfamiliar words:
We use picture clues:
Helper words and definitions:
And we can make a connection to an experience similar to the character in the text. Making a connection helps us imagine what the word might mean.

We also use our imagination to help us visualize a story. We can create mental images to understand the text.

We read this book, but Mrs. Carney was so mean she didn't share the pictures. We had to create our own images in our brains and illustrate them!

We also read a hilarious poem by Jack Prelutsky. We made "visualizing" sunglasses. Around the frames, we wrote the words that helped us create our image on the left. The image on the left is what we imagined BEFORE Mrs. Carney read the end of the poem. After the end of the poem was read, we made our new mental image.

In Math, we worked on the Commutative Property (Flip-Flop Facts)
We know that Mrs. Carney aaaaaaaaalways makes us prove our thinking with some evidence
By the end of the week, we made our own balancing scales and were able to WRITE to explain our thinking. How impressive is that?

Thanks for letting me spend every day with your wonderful first graders!
