We obviously had some very strong opinions about this. ;-)
David Shannon is a great author to provoke conversations in the classroom. This week, we used one of his books to debate: Can a kid ever have too many toys?
We ended the week with some VERY important opinions. Everyone identified "The Best Part of Me." I can't wait to share these pieces with you during our conferences. Here are some sneak peeks at the best parts of us.
We used our context clues to help us understand unfamiliar words:
We use picture clues:
Helper words and definitions:
And we can make a connection to an experience similar to the character in the text. Making a connection helps us imagine what the word might mean.
We also use our imagination to help us visualize a story. We can create mental images to understand the text.
We read this book, but Mrs. Carney was so mean she didn't share the pictures. We had to create our own images in our brains and illustrate them!
We also read a hilarious poem by Jack Prelutsky. We made "visualizing" sunglasses. Around the frames, we wrote the words that helped us create our image on the left. The image on the left is what we imagined BEFORE Mrs. Carney read the end of the poem. After the end of the poem was read, we made our new mental image.
In Math, we worked on the Commutative Property (Flip-Flop Facts)
We know that Mrs. Carney aaaaaaaaalways makes us prove our thinking with some evidence.
By the end of the week, we made our own balancing scales and were able to WRITE to explain our thinking. How impressive is that?
Thanks for letting me spend every day with your wonderful first graders!
