Week in Review
In the last week before Spring Break, my phone went on the fritz. (I've really got to learn to stop dropping my phone!!) Having said that, I have pictures - but only of two subjects!

In that last week, we studied prepositions. We learned that a preposition is a direction word that tells you where something is. A preposition is "anywhere a mouse can go." We used our very own Space Pig books to identify words.

On one of our beautiful days, we went outside to the playground and took pictures of ourselves using prepositions! The next day, we made a class book using these pictures and our prepositions. :)

In math, we studied fractions! First graders are expected to be able to partition (divide) circles and squares into halves and fourths. We are also expected to be able to describe those parts as halves and quarters.

To begin, we talked about how you could fairly divide a pizza if you and your friend had two different preferences in toppings.

We made our own pizzas and wrote about how we divided them to be equal.

We used stickers to show that we understood how to partition shapes into halves and wrote fractions to match.

One of our girls thought of this fun game! She reached into her pencil box and placed the following items in front of us.

Then, she asked, "What fraction of my objects are crayons?" I was so impressed with her application of fractions that we threw out my lesson for the day and played her fun game!

Finally, we played with playdoh to demonstrate our understanding of fractions.

I hope you have had a BEAUTIFUL and restful Spring Break. I know that I am exhausted from all of my traveling but am so ready to get back to my routine with your first graders. :)
