Week in Review
Because I was having some issues with pictures last week, there will be pictures from the past 2 weeks on this blog post! Enjoy!
We've been working away on How To writing this month. Part of that means we have talked about how to ZOOM IN on a topic. It's a lot more difficult to write about how to BE a chef than it is to teach someone how to use the stove.
To help us practice this concept, we worked in teams to list the things that different professions could teach us to do!
We were able to take this idea to help us zoom in on our own topics for our published writing pieces!
In phonics, we like to make sure we can apply our skill to writing AND reading.
We practiced finding some of our skills in our books for the week!
(These kiddos were looking in the Wonders version of The Mitten)
Italy
Germany
Sweden
We learned about La Befana from Italy!

We also spent time talking about Cause and Effect. We used a hilarious book called Sneezy the Snowman:
We listed as many causes as we could think of for the one, common effect.
We had a blast making our own melted snowmen, too!
In Math, we have worked HARD on place value. Our goal in first grade is to understand that two digit numbers are a group of tens and ones. To get us started, we worked on expanded form. These kiddos are using some of my favorite manipulatives: arrow cards. When you create the number correctly and pull it apart, it will reveal the number as tens and ones. For example, 49=40+9 when expanded.
We also made some place value snakes!
The kids have had so much fun learning about Globetrot Scott this week! Our friend has sent us packages from all over the globe to teach us about the ways in which people celebrate the Holidays.
So far, the kids have received packages from:Italy
Germany
Sweden
We learned about La Befana from Italy!
Can you believe they have a witch who visits them?!
In Germany, they are visited by Christkind - a beautiful angel! We also learned the tradition of tinsel and Christmas trees started in Germany!
Finally, in Sweden, we learned about the sneaky little Tomten who travels around.
I wasn't able to be at school for their craft, but I hear that Globetrot Scott even sent them supplies to make their very own Tomten!
I can't wait to see what new goodies Globetrot Scott sends us this week! :)
