Week in Review
This week, we were able to (almost) completely wrap up our penguin unit! We have a little bit more to do next week, but the kids have had so much fun with this study.
We started work on our final opinion piece: the most interesting penguin.
Kids researched their favorite penguin and used their interesting facts to support their opinion!
Our final writing piece is always so cute and I can't wait to show you when it is finished!
On Friday, we started working on our life size penguin paintings!
The kids worked together in groups to paint life size drawings of the penguins we have studied.
We will finish these up next week and display them in the hallway for the March of the Penguins!
We were strapped for time on Friday because of our movie and our PTA Fundraiser kickoff!
Be sure to check your child's backpack for a packet from Mr. Bumblebee about a way to raise money for Wellington.
Also this week, we studied compound words.
One of my favorite ways to practice every year is through "compound construction." One of our construction activities was building words with a puzzle!
The kids worked in groups to build their words and then record them.
Our focus was to be able to understand that compound words are two words that are smushed together to make a new meaning.
This week was also the 100th day of school! I was so disappointed to have to miss the 100th day but, fortunately, first grade celebrates the 99th day, too! As I'm sure you've heard, we had a series of tasks we had to complete in order to defeat Evil Dr. Double Digit!
Our first task was to complete 100 different workouts! Thankfully it was split into 10 groups of 10, but it was definitely a challenge for us all.
We also had to brainstorm a list of 100 WORDS that we could spell. It took a loooooooooooong time, but we did it (with teamwork, of course).
We were also challenged to build towers using 100 materials. Each group got to choose which material they worked with...some were easier than others.
On the 100th day, kids got to practice some creativity with their imaginations! They were challenged to create pictures using the digits in 100. Here are just a few!
We also wrapped up our Cutest Pet Writing (which should have made its way back home to you!)
Have a FABULOUS week!
