We have had a blast learning about the Holidays around the world this week! We learned about the yule logs in France:

We learned about Sweden and the Tomten who comes to visit:

We also studied Italy! We read this book and learned about La Befana!

We had a blast celebrating Boxing Day as we learned about the Netherlands!
We had a gift that was passed around the circle like musical chairs. The kiddos were not very pleased when they discovered the package had many layers! :)
Inside were some hand cut and painted wooden ornaments from my grandmother. These are always so fun to give my students each year!

We also made pomanders when we learned about the Netherlands!

These are super easy to make! Just Halos, toothpicks, markers, and cloves!

We also studied Russia and learned about the tradition of nesting dolls.
We had so much fun looking up different themes for these dolls...then we made our own!

Have a FABULOUS WEEK!

Here's a fun look back at the past 2 weeks!
We read this hilarious story about a Thanksgiving dinner gone horribly wrong!

We had a blast coming up with what our Thanksgiving dinner would be to replace all of the missing food from the story.

We also read

and imagined what we would do if we were a turkey trying to escape Thanksgiving!

Some of our ideas for disguises were hysterical!

To review our phonics sounds before the break, we did graffiti around the room.

When we got back from the break, the kiddos were pumped to learn about a new type of writing: explanatory. To kick off the unit, we made some first grader trail mix! Looking at the recipe helped us understand that explanatory writing teaches you how to do or make something.

(We used raisins, pretzel sticks, marshmallows, and goldfish).
Later in the week, the kiddos had their opportunity to try out their own explanatory writing.

In math, we worked hard to count HIGH numbers. We did this by covering up shoe prints with objects to practice 1 to 1 correspondence. We also practiced writing numbers to 120 by making our own counting strips!

Have a FANTASTIC WEEK!
