Week in Review
Another week in the books and we are rockin' and rollin' into the swing of things! :)
This week, we started meeting in our small groups for reading AND math. The kids are making independent choices for Daily 5 and choosing which activities they prefer most in Math. We've been doing such a great job that one of the district directors even popped in to watch our kiddos at work! (Two thumbs up for THAT!)
We have been diving right into our new curriculum, Wonders. This week, be on the lookout for a packet of pages that I have taken out of your kiddos workbook from this curriculum. You will notice many of these pages are blank - and that is okay. We cover a lot of skills without paper in our classroom. (We're 5-7 year olds, we don't like to sit down too often ;) ). These packets are NOT requirements, however, feel free to have your child complete some of the pages for extra practice at his/her pace. If you return the packet to me completed, I'll be sure to give your child a sweet treat!
We'll kick this post off with Daily 5!
This is the first week that we have made our own, independent choices of what we want to do during Daily 5 because we MET OUR STAMINA GOAL!
We had students writing...
while others were on iPads....
and others were reading with a friend!
Betcha didn't know your first grader could be so independent, eh?
Your children have been LOVING accessing reading on the iPads and computers. Last week, I shared with you a way to practice math on the iPad. This week, here is a bit more information about how to access reading at home with programs your child is already familiar with!
This week, I also began pulling groups of students to my back table. While we weren't quite ready to dive into guided reading, my students were ready to learn the last option of Daily 5: WORD WORK! (I love this one!)
Word work is all about manipulating sounds that we are practicing in phonics. Students will be working with their spelling words all week long through fun, hands-on practice like stamps
For example, I might show the word "pat" and ask students to turn it in to "pats." Next, I might say, "Turn pats into pans." This helps your child identify a letter's sound, identify where that sound is heard, and manipulate the given word to create a new one. SO many skills at play (and so easy to do at home!)
In writing, we are working hard to prepare ourselves for our first published piece: a personal narrative. Some of our mini-lessons this week included:
C- Capitalize
O - Organization (neat handwriting and finger spaces)
P - Punctuation
S - Spelling
There were so many, "THANK YOU!!!" and "This is GREAT writing!" and squeals heard all through the room that morning.
In Math, we've been working on fact fluency. This week was all about making 10. We did lots of practice with finding out how many more to make 10.
And we did a new twist on an old game: Go Fish!
Students played Go Fish by asking for cards that made 10, NOT for pairs. You could so easily play this game at home, too!
It was a hit and will be making its way into our math tubs this week. :)

One of the BEST ways to develop phonemic awareness with your child is through making words. Each week, we apply our phonics skill by manipulating initial, medial, and ending sounds.
In writing, we are working hard to prepare ourselves for our first published piece: a personal narrative. Some of our mini-lessons this week included:
- pictures have a setting
- characters have clothing!
- the best stories are ones that come from the heart
To explain that characters in a story need clothing, we started out with this VERY artistic drawing of someone in our class.
For some STRANGE reason, no one could tell me who I drew a picture of! We then had a great talk about what a picture SHOULD look like:

To kick off our Friday, we spread some classroom cheer with bucket fillers...ON OUR DESKS! :) I wish I had thought to take pictures of students as they read their sweet messages.
