Week in Review
What a week! We dove right back in after Fall Break with some retelling. For starters, we practiced identifying the BME (Beginning, Middle, and End) and retold the stories to our friends.
On Monday, we read Bats at the Ballgame.

 Later in the week, we learned how to summarize a story with the SWBS Strategy!

 We kept up our Bat theme with these books:

By Friday, we were ready to use it with our friends.

We also practiced an important skill for reading and writing: finding and using spelling patterns! In reading, we call this "Chunky Monkey." It helps us decode unfamiliar words.

In spelling, it sometimes manifests as word families. We had fun rolling out some spelling patterns and reading the words we made.

To practice telling our Opinions, we had a VERY serious debate with this book.

We started out the week with reading the text and listing our REASONS for why we held a certain opinion about the animal. On Tuesday, we learned the OREO method for writing our opinion. We wrote a class piece to share our opinions about the animal.

 By the end of the week, we were using this text to write our opinions with the OREO method.

Week in Review
This was our first week moving away from personal narratives and into opinion writing. EVERY first grader has their own opinion (as I am sure you are well aware) and we loved sharing them with our friends.
To start, we practiced explaining the difference between a fact and an opinion.

We learned some simple ways to begin telling our opinion.

 We also practiced telling our opinion (and understanding that our friends might not share the same opinion as us!) We needed to practice some of our conversational skills again so we did some fun Would You Rather questions with Quiz, Quiz, Trade.

By Wednesday, we were ready to start giving some reasons for our opinions.

We taste tested 3 different types of candy and reviewed adjectives by describing each piece of candy.

 After we tasted all of them, we chose our favorite and used the adjectives as our reasons for liking that type of candy best! Our friends had some silly conversations about their favorites.

We love adjectives so we had a blast continuing to practice describing with them this week.
The week started out with us reading about our five senses as a way to experience and describe the world around us. Here are some of the ways we described big, fluffy marshmallows!

 Next, we described all sorts of wacky pumpkins!

 Then it was finally time for our Pumpkin Investigation!
Everyone knows investigators have to carry around important files. So, we made our very own pumpkin files.

 We explored the outside and inside of our class pumpkin.

(gotta love tying in those adjectives!)

We visited different stations to explore our pumpkins circumference, height..

We decorated our pumpkins!

 We tested its ability to sink or float!

 We sorted our pumpkin seed into groups of ten for better counting technique. We had fun making predictions about how many were inside...here's a hint: our mat held 240 and we STILL had more seeds to count! Regardless...check out that hands-on teamwork below!
