Week in Review
"Money, money, money, mon-AY!" That song has been stuck in my head all week as we have studied coins in math workshop. In first grade, we are determined to learn the values of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. We are also going to master the amounts of each of these coins and the various ways to make given amounts.

To start, we simply sorted our coins by name/look/value, etc. This helped us really figure out what the differences are between those pesky nickels and quarters.

We shared what we noticed about each coin (this smart thinker noticed how some of our coins actually say their names!)
We practiced skip counting and how to write the cent symbol.
We also began balancing equivalent coin amounts. Next week, we will practice making specific amounts of coins. This will help us as we practice buying items worth a certain amount.
During Comprehension, we practiced telling the author's purpose for writing. We probably had the most fun with persuasion...we wrote letters to "Mr. Derby" about whether we thought other animals should be allowed to race in the Kentucky Derby.
We learned about the "rough" letters that say, "OWWWWW!!!"
But their favorite part of the week (I think) was learning about the Kentucky Derby. We've been in love with this fun horse and jockey that my grandmother cut out and painted for us! Impressive, right?!
We had a horse trainer visit us on Thursday. We could have sat outside and listened to her all afternoon! She gave us some great information and even let us ask our most pressing questions.

This is the silk her jockeys use when they race her horses!
Some of the different foods that horses can eat.
Let's have another great week!!!
