May 26 - Last Day of school! This day will also include our first grade awards in the classroom and a family picnic in the morning!
Part of our last week of school will include signing/decorating picture frames from our peers. I will be purchasing these $1 4x6 frames from the wooden craft section of Michaels. If you are able, please consider donating 1 or 2 of these frames to help us make our final first grade memories.

Week in Review
We continued working on Money this week. We played a lot of different games like "Trade a Dime" to help us master the concept of 10 cents vs. 1 cent.
We LOVED playing Bankrupt. I showed them how we could easily play this at home, if we wanted. To play, you roll a dice. The number on the dice tells you how many coins you have to pick up with your eyes closed from the center pile.
When you've gathered your coins, you have to count the amount correctly. The bank (the other players) can determine if you are correct. If you are correct, you keep your coins. If you're incorrect, the coins go back into the pile. If you roll a 6, however, you don't get 6 coins. Rolling a 6 means you are BANKRUPT!!! All of your coins thus far must go back into the pile.
We've got so many competitive learners. :) This game was SO much fun.
We also spent the week working diligently on our Mother's Day calendar. I hope you loved it as much as they loved making it for you!
At the end of the week, we had a special visit from George Ella Lyon. She showed us what motivates her to write, how she gets her ideas, and how a book even gets published in the first place! Can you believe that huge cloth is going to get cut and folded into a book?
She sang us a special song she had written.
She posed for a class picture - where I found out she works alongside one of my high school teachers! The kids feel like we're practically linked to a celebrity now! :)
She inspired us to go back to our room and write some poetry about our experiences....this time, we focused on shape poems about animals we saw at the ZOO!
Ellie worked SO hard. She had some amazing repetition and adjectives included in her work.
