Week in Review
The days before Thanksgiving are wild at school! Here's a look back at what we squeezed in.
We read this book:
and talked about what we were thankful for. We used that brainstorm list to help us complete our Thankful pies. :) I hope these made it home safely to you!

Of course, we had to also have some REAL pie. We incorporated our How To writing with Thanksgiving by making some Pumpkin Pie in a bag!
The kids wrote a class piece to explain how to make it...but yours truly forgot to take a picture.

Here's all you need:

  • graham crackers
  • whipped cream
  • vanilla pudding
  • canned pumpkin
  • cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg
  • milk

1. Put the vanilla pudding and milk in a bag (just enough milk to thicken it up)
2. Squeeze to mix the pudding!
3. Add a whole can of pumpkin - squeeze again!
4. Add spices - squeeze again!
5. Crumble  a graham cracker into the bottom of a cup.
6. Cut the corner of your bag and pipe some pie into your cup. Top with whipped cream!

Due to the shortened week, that's all I have for you this time.
Hope you had a MARVELOUS Thanksgiving!

Week in Review
We had so much fun kicking off a new writing unit this week! We are talking all about "How-To" Writing in this unit. To get things started, we have been practicing the best way to explain how to do things - so we had the opportunity to be better teachers than Mrs. Carney. In this picture, you see one of our students teaching another how to do Read to Self. This was after Mrs. Carney had just failed hooooorribly in trying to explain it ;)

We also had the BEST time explaining how to make our special First Grade Trail Mix!

The kids helped me write this recipe (and insisted that we send it home to you guys so that you can make it at home, too!)

Later in the week, we read this hilarious book about a boy getting ready for Thanksgiving. He listed some pretty wild rules for us to have a successful day.
So, we wrote our own versions!

We also spent some time talking about Crazy Grandma E. She is always bonking those vowels on the head and telling them to be polite and, "Say your name!"

In Language, we were introduced to Verbs with this fun song:
It's sure to wear your kiddo out during the break ;)

We also made sure to practice the difference between verbs and non-verbs with Angry Birds!

We also found verbs in a book!

In reading, we practiced retelling stories with these fun books:
(Test your kiddo's memory by asking about the surprise twist in this turkey book!)

We had a blast sequencing this book, too:

In math, we had a wild week by discussing subtraction AND fact families:

Fact families are a way to help us understand how addition and subtraction relate to one another.
For example, if I know 2+3=5 then I also know 5-3=2.

So we practiced moving those numbers around as life size math problems!
And also with some dominoes for easy practice :)

Have a great week!

Week in Review
This week was all about wrapping up our second unit!
In writing, we spent a LOT of time going back and revising our work.
We know that we use COPS to check our handwriting:
C - Capital at the beginning but no funky capitals!
O - Organized and neat handwriting
P - Punctuation
S - spelling and making sense

The kids helped me edit my own writing, first.
 Then they edited their writing...
 and a partner's writing!
Finally, we took our revisions and made a final draft.
We are so proud of our Opinion pieces about our favorite character! (Don't worry - all of their writing pieces will go home with you at the end of the year : ) ).

In Math, we had a blast kicking off our subtraction unit with the Cookie Monster Challenge.
We watched a video about a Cookie Monster and we talked about how we could figure out how many cookies the cookie monster ate.
By the end of the challenge, the students had developed so many great problem solving strategies to relate addition and subtraction!
We even got in front of the class and shared how we solved our problems with our partners.
In language, we focused on proper nouns! We made proper noun pizzas :)

These will all hang in our hallway!
In math, we had a blast practicing subtraction with playdoh SMASH!

Have a fabulous week!
