Week in Review
As many of you know, I had to be out for two days this week in order to attend some exciting district meetings. Consequently, I do not have a ton of photos from this week but here is still a small look at what we were able to accomplish!

Our animal research continued on for another week in our Language Arts time! Our first graders have been working so hard to create entire brochures all about their animals. The next step of this work is to design a habitat for their animal at an imaginary zoo! While we visited Cincinnati Zoo, our kiddos were hard at work analyzing the habitats of the animals they saw. Since then, the kids have been studying the habitats and brainstorming ideas for what each animal would need for a happy and safe life inside our zoos.
We've LOVED reading about these habitats on PebbleGo.
Each day, the kids got more independence and ultimately were able to design posters with ideas for each habitat AND work collaboratively in a Google Document!
It's so fun seeing what these first graders are capable of doing at this point in the year!

In math, we had so much fun learning about counting coins.

Throughout the week, your kiddos learned the values of each coin AND learned how to make the same amount of money in many different ways.

Have a great week!

Week in Review
This week was all about the ZOO! The kids learned about an upcoming project in which they'll be designing zoos as a group in the classroom. To begin, we learned about animals that had escaped zoos all over the world! We started to brainstorm ideas and designs for ensuring zoos were safe for the animals AND the people visiting them.

The kiddos began drawing their ideas (before we had done any true research)

Here's a list of some things we thought might be necessary to make our animals feel safe (and the humans, too).

We also knew that working in a group to design such a BIG project would require some preparation. We worked to create something in a group with limited supplies and directions.

It was so fun to see their minds at work!

This helped us brainstorm some "group norms" that we thought would help us to avoid any problems in the future. After compiling our list and reciting it VERY dramatically, we signed our group norm contract.

I think we're all a little excited about what this project will look like :)

By the end of the week, some of us were already making some great improvements in our research by actually getting our brochures COMPLETED! I cannot wait for the kiddos to be able to share all of their hard work with you before the year is over :)

Wondering where the zoo pictures are? I love to hold on to these for our end of the year book and slideshow. If you were a chaperone on the trip, please send me the pictures you took! I would love to include them! :)

Here's a peek at the beginning of our Animal Research! We are so excited to see the animals this week at the zoo!

We also had a BLAST writing our own word problems this week. We learned that 3 addend word problems are much less scary to solve when they just seem like stories.

This week's post was short but I cannot thank you enough for all of your outpouring of support over the past weeks. Us teachers are so thankful to have families like you who help us give 100% to our kids day in and day out. You are truly lifesavers!

Here is to another great week!

Week in Review
This week, we learned about fractions! We learned about important words like: equal, unequal, halves, fourths, quarters, numerator, and denominator.

The best way to understand fractions is to understand that fractions need equal parts/fair shares. Fair shares are what we think of when we need to split something fairly...like a pizza! We split up a whole pizza as a class into halves. Next, our table groups split their pizzas into halves, too!

Finally, everyone got to design their own pizza with fair shares/equal halves.

Throughout the week, we discussed and wrote about halves and fourths in a variety of ways.
By the end of the week, we were playing games!

In writing, we began our unit on how to conduct research using informational texts. To get started, we studied sharks as a class! We practiced finding and recording information and then turning those notes into actual paragraphs.

By the end of the week, your kiddo selected his/her animal to conduct research on. This animal SHOULD be available for your kiddo to see at the zoo, too! How exciting!!

Getting us ready for writing our informational pieces, we also studied finding the author's point and their reasons to support it. We learned that authors can't just make claims without supporting their thinking!
Your kiddos got to practice this skill with their table partners.

Here's to another fabulous week at Wellington!
