Week in Review
Another great week in first grade! The first unit of Wonders lets us really spend time focusing on beginning comprehension strategies: retelling. Part of retelling is being able to identify key details (this lays the groundwork for summarizing in the future!) Using some of the texts from Wonders, our first graders have been working to pull out key details and use them to sequence and retell a story with their peers.
Can you believe first graders can take notes about the books they're reading? :-D
Along with reading, we've been focusing on fluency! Fluency not only includes reading accuracy and rate but includes inflection. We've studied when to use exclamations and question marks (the difference between telling and asking) and are working to master being able to hear the difference!
We read this hilarious story:
Then had some fun coming up with our own Pigeon quotes! We shared them to the class

and had to guess which punctuation fit at the end!
It brought on lots of laughs. :)

We were excited to start a new unit in math: Geometry! We've been exploring how to compose shapes with other shapes. The kids are loving it.

Of course, we also had fun at our Evan's Orchard Field Trip! Thanks to all of our volunteers who showed up and even toughed it through the rain. You guys make trips like this possible and FUN!

Have a FANTASTIC week!

Week in Review
Woo! What a wild week. We had Book Fair, Grandparent's Day, Teddy Bear Picnic, and 2 MAP tests in a single week! Thankfully, our upcoming week is back to normal (with the exception of our trip to the Orchard on Thursday. Yay!)

Here's a look back at some of our fun!

This was our first week being able to choose classroom jobs. Some of our jobs in the classroom are being in charge of our "Germ Juice"
 leading the Phonics Dance
leading Morning Meeting
and the coveted Teacher's Assistant (or "mini Carney" as the kids have been calling it)

It was also the first time we got to use our classroom iPads!

Your kids were LOVING the free app Sight Word Ninja:

On Grandparent's Day, we read this hilarious book:

Then we talked about what we would do with our grandparents!

While the other grades were celebrating their Grandparent Days, we got to have our own fun!
We went to the Book Fair

and had our Teddy Bear Picnic!

Some of us left our teddy bears at school overnight and when we returned to school the next day, we discovered they had been up to some crazy things!

We ended our week with our fourth grade buddies. This upcoming week, we will be reading about friendships so we thought it was a great idea to make a book about our fourth grade friends!

HAVE A GREAT WEEK! :)
