Teacher's App of the Week

Here is a "teacher recommended" app that will help your first grader practice a skill that we are working on this week. 

Kids A-Z is an app that we use constantly in the classroom. Download this app for a simple way to see on-level texts for your child.

The teacher username you will need is: acarney8

Find your child's account in our class page and their password is the picture of the bunny.

Week in Review
We made it through another full week of school! I hope you are able to relax and celebrate by spending time with your family over this long, holiday weekend. :) Your first grader worked so hard this week they absolutely deserve that extra time outdoors!

Here is a fun look back at our week.
We learned the entire phonics dance!! We are able to get some of our wiggles out before starting phonics each day by saying the chants for all of the letters. Soon we will be adding chants and dances in for other common spellings. This week, our focus was on short i.

For Language, we talked about MINTS.

We even enjoyed some mints while checking some "brain-burp" sentences to fix those funky capitals.

These girls are using "COPS" to fix their sentences.

 Sadie was fixing some of our sentences on the board!

We continued building our reading stamina for Daily 5.

We started using Book Buddies.

 We learned how to do READ TO BUDDY!!! (and how to lounge in the Big Joe chairs in our class library!)

Probably the most exciting of all...We learned how to use IPADs!! We love to use iPads to help us during Daily 5 and during math groups. This group was checking out Sight Words Ninja

We were able to work so hard on Daily 5 that we actually made it to all of our small groups on Friday! 

The last rotation we have left to learn is Word Work. After that, Daily 5 will be in full swing!

Our focus during Comprehension was on Retelling. 

We used strategies like the 5-Finger Retell

and the retelling rope.

Here are some of the stories we focused on this week:

By the end of the week, we were able to make our own Stellaluna bats to tell the BME (Beginning, Middle, End)

Math was JAMPACKED. We are working to become fluent on ways to make 10.

One of our favorite ways is playing "Shake and Spill."

At the end of the week, we started our Rainbows to 10 Addition Facts. We will finish this up on Tuesday. :)

Week in Review!
Here are some of the ways we deepened our learning in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. 

We continued practicing our Doubles Facts.

 

We continued to practice retelling by writing out a summary...on the tables!

We got very into our books during Read to Buddy time.

We read several Kevin Henkes books this week to practice identifying central message:

Central Message: Wemberly was always worried. We do not need to worry! We have grown-ups who can keep us safe.

Central Message: Change can be good...and sometimes even better!

Central Message: Being brave doesn't mean you're not allowed to be scared. Being scared doesn't mean you can never be brave.

We enjoyed our "Ketchup and Mustard" time on Friday. (We spend 5-10 minutes "ketch(up)ing up on unfinished work. Any unfinished work goes home for the weekend. The "mustards" are friends who worked hard all week to keep their desks clear of unfinished work. We celebrate with a bit of free time right before recess!)

Week in Review!
Last week was full of so much learning! We pushed forward from common nouns into proper nouns. Your first grader learned that proper nouns name a specific noun. This can be tricky for our friends so we started out with a simple sort.

By the end of the week, we were able to read and write proper nouns on our own! We proved we could do it by making some "yummy" Proper Noun Pizzas!

We are really starting to dig into our Personal Narrative Unit. We spent a lot of time in our small groups pinning down that one small moment for our upcoming book. 

After we locked down our topic and brainstormed a few details, we took a side-step to really focus on what it means to put a story in its correct sequence. This past week, your first grader had so much fun writing about a single, small moment from the loved story, "The Three Little Pigs." By the end of the week, he or she was in a group of 6 students who were responsible for sequencing their small moments and reading their story aloud to the class. Here's an example of one group's hard work!

"There were three little pigs. When they were big enough, they said goodbye to their mom."

"There were three little pigs. They were making their houses. One made it sticks. One made it straw. One made it bricks."

"Wolf blew down the hay house and it broke!"

"The wolf blew down the stick house. He wanted to eat the pigs."

"After, the first little pig and the second little pig was scared and ran off. They ran off to third little pigs house. And they were safe!"

"Once upon a time there were three little pigs. The wolf was trying to eat the three little pigs!"

We studied another fun story this week: The Day the Crayons Quit.

This book helped us study Character Traits! The first graders helped to complete this fun chart.

By the end of the week...we chose our favorite crayons and made our own crayon box to describe their character traits.
