Week in Review
This week was wild with our field trip! Here's a bit of what we were able to accomplish in the classroom.

We all got our BAT books (and fell in love immediately).

We talked about how sentences in English follow a certain order.

We wrote on the table (again!) to help us practice our spelling words. These charts are a GREAT way to help your child develop their phonics skills. At the top of the chart, we wrote a familiar word or spelling pattern. The child used these patterns to help spell the week's words.

For example, if the child heard me say, "Hit!" the child would use the chart to determine which word "hit" sounds like. The child then uses the word "it" to help them spell "hit!"

We also brainstormed words that were NOT going to be on our spelling test but could still fit in these patterns.

In math, we focused on addition strategies. Mrs. Carney doesn't want to see you using those fingers anymore! Use other strategies!

Manipulatives are a great strategy for developing concrete awareness in math.

We also rolled dice to create new equations that we solved by drawing pictures!

One of their favorites (and mine, too!) is counting on.

To count on, identify the larger number and count on by how much you are adding.

We practiced with some playdoh smashing!
Students made one large playdoh ball to represent "big number" to put in their brains.
We SMASHED the large ball and tapped the remaining, smaller playdoh balls to help us count on to our answer.

Our last strategy of the week was the number line! Here's a GREAT way you can practice at home:

Build a number line and use a bouncy ball or softball to "hop" from number to number.
OR (my personal favorite) create a number line on ziploc bags. Write the equation on the bag and use the slider to help you move from number to number!

This part of the week's post is focused on our field trip!
Thanks a BUNDLE to everyone who was able to help our trip in any way. Your kindness and generosity are what keep our classroom running!

Week in Review
I hope you've had a restful weekend! Here is a fun look back at the hard work we put in this week.

Can you believe we're already at a "review" week? We reviewed the types of nouns: person, place or thing. To take it a step farther this week, we had to practice finding nouns within sentences!

We introduced 2 new jobs this week: Calendar Helper and...
Morning Work Helper! Some serious independence in first grade! :)

We are still getting in the swing of our daily schedule so my groups who met with me during Daily 5 were learning some of their Word Work options.

These kiddos are learning how to "Pyramid Write" their spelling words.

These girls are doing Rainbow Writing for their Word Work!

We practiced how to share our Writing pieces during Writer's Workshop! We are about to begin our big Personal Narrative piece and it is so important to receive feedback about our hard work.

We practiced our addition strategies in Math this week. To wrap it all up, we built a LIFE-SIZE number line from 0-100!

Talk about some serious teamwork!
Have a great week! :)
