First Day Jitters - we did it!

Please continue sending in any paperwork - and a BIG thank you to those of you who have already returned it. I will be contacting you within the next week if I am missing any forms from you.

Quick Reference Links:

Thanks to all of you for making our first day of First Grade a HUGE success! I am so excited to spend the year with this fun class. :) They blew me away all day long with how much they remembered from last year...they made first grade look easy.

By far, the most memorable thing that happened for your first grader today was making JITTER JUICE! If you haven't already heard since your student made it home, we read this book today:

In the book, students got to meet a girl named Sarah. Sarah begged and begged her dad to not make her go to her new school. Of course, her dad insisted she go...but there was a major twist at the end. (Be sure to ask your first grader what the big twist was!) We ended the book by talking about whether or not they were nervous on the first day of school, too. Can you believe that not one of our kiddos said they were even the tiniest bit nervous? Amaaaaaazing!

Despite our brave class having no fear, we read a poem called "Jitter Juice" (this should have come home in their blue folder today :) ). We predicted what kind of ingredients might go into a drink that claims to make the butterflies go away...and then we actually made it. Our class had so much fun that
many of your first graders came up to me afterwards to ask, "Mrs. Carney, can you please send this recipe to my mom? I want to show her how to make it at home!" One sweet friend even said, "I hope I remember to make this the next time I feel nervous!" It is always so refreshing to hear how students plan to use their school experiences outside of the classroom (even if it's just juice).

So...without further ado...
Jitter Juice Recipe
Sprite/Sierra Mist
Pink Lemonade Mix
Sprinkles

Step 1: Pour the Sprite/Sierra Mist into a cup (your kiddo will wait eagerly beside it!)
Step 2: Scoop a spoonful of the pink lemonade mix into the cup.
Step 3: Add sprinkles.
Step 4: Stir, stir, stir!

We will be spending the rest of the week getting back into the swing of how we "do" school. Help your first grader get lots of rest as they fill their brain with all of our new procedures this week. :)

A Bit of Housekeeping!

Below are a few reminders to get some housekeeping items out of the way...
  • Have you filled out your child's transportation for this year? Please complete this form no later than August 6 (click here).
***If your child has a Kindergarten sibling, and you attended the Kindergarten screening on July 28th or 29th, we already have your transportation information. Please do not submit this form again.
  • Here is our supply list for first grade. We will have a drop box for the $12 fee at Welcome to Wellington day. In first grade, we DO NOT do community supplies. Things to put your child's name on are: scissors, markers, pencil box, clipboard, colored pencils and ear buds. The rest will be sorted out.
  • Welcome to Wellington day will be on 8/6 from  6-8pm. This will be a drop-in event so you are welcome to come anytime. For this event, there will be 7 stations to complete around the room. While you are busy filling out the appropriate paperwork at each station, your child can unpack and sort their school supplies. ***To save you some time on this "hectic" night you could go ahead and set up your child's pencil box for them prior to coming in.
Here is what should be inside each box:
2 sharpened pencils
1 pink eraser
2 glue sticks
1 pair of scissors
1 box of crayons
1 highlighter
Their box can go in their cubby once it's complete (ear buds, clip board, colored pencils and markers all stay on their desk).
  • Attention Wellington Parents!! We would love to have as many as possible volunteer at Wellington!! In order to do so, we need you to complete the volunteer information that can be accessed through this link. Sometimes it takes a little while for this to be approved, so the sooner you can apply the sooner you can join the Wellington team!! We are all very excited about our future work together!!
  • In an effort to save trees, I am currently in the process of converting all my classroom forms into Google Docs. This way you are able to just click on a link and answer questions electronically. My hope is that this will be more convenient for you! Here is the blog permission slip link: Click Here! Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you are having trouble accessing any of the documents that I send.

If you'd like to receive notifications via text, please text "@acarney" to this number: 81010(android) or 81010(iOS). Doing this will subscribe you to my Remind101 text group. This allows me to send you any quick reminders straight to your phone!
