Week in Review
We had a successful first week back to school! Can you believe we are down to only 26 days until summer?

It was such a beautiful week that we got to enjoy DEAR outside. DEAR stands for Drop Everything and Read. I LOVE this part of our week. :)

On Friday, we got to end our week by wrapping up some of our sharing about what we did on Spring Break. It was so fun to hear what you were up to during that week!

All week long, we learned an approach doing research. We used a lot of different sources: YouTube, PebbleGo, Articles, books. We made a circle map of what we THOUGHT we knew in addition to our new information about...Great White Sharks!

After recording our information, we learned how to sort it into categories.

By the end of the week, we were writing our own paragraphs about sharks and even giving the sections titles!

Why are we doing this? Because on Monday, your child will get to choose their own animal to research! We have compiled a list of animals that we can see at the Cincinnati Zoo that also have some strong sources available to us. Your child is going to complete their own research on this animal! Here's a peak as to what is up ahead:
(The date is obviously not filled in on this note but I will send a hard copy home this week with it. These projects will need to be completed by May 5).

In math, we worked hard on adding three numbers together in a word problem.

...and we played a little Making 10/Making 20 Go Fish

Have a fabulous week!

Week in Review
In the last week before Spring Break, my phone went on the fritz. (I've really got to learn to stop dropping my phone!!) Having said that, I have pictures - but only of two subjects!

In that last week, we studied prepositions. We learned that a preposition is a direction word that tells you where something is. A preposition is "anywhere a mouse can go." We used our very own Space Pig books to identify words.

On one of our beautiful days, we went outside to the playground and took pictures of ourselves using prepositions! The next day, we made a class book using these pictures and our prepositions. :)

In math, we studied fractions! First graders are expected to be able to partition (divide) circles and squares into halves and fourths. We are also expected to be able to describe those parts as halves and quarters.

To begin, we talked about how you could fairly divide a pizza if you and your friend had two different preferences in toppings.

We made our own pizzas and wrote about how we divided them to be equal.

We used stickers to show that we understood how to partition shapes into halves and wrote fractions to match.

One of our girls thought of this fun game! She reached into her pencil box and placed the following items in front of us.

Then, she asked, "What fraction of my objects are crayons?" I was so impressed with her application of fractions that we threw out my lesson for the day and played her fun game!

Finally, we played with playdoh to demonstrate our understanding of fractions.

I hope you have had a BEAUTIFUL and restful Spring Break. I know that I am exhausted from all of my traveling but am so ready to get back to my routine with your first graders. :)
