Week in Review!
We can add another successful week in our books! :)
Here are some of the ways we continued to grow as first graders this week.

We finished our Personal Narratives!!! One of the final steps was to peer edit with a partner. It was amazing the types of conversations that were happening in the classroom. These kids know what it takes to be great story tellers! Even better, we had an author party on Friday where every student had the option to share their story aloud in the "Teacher Chair." Talk about a captivated audience. :)

We also closed our unit on digraphs (2 letters that make 1 sound) and said goodbye to our H Brothers (Charles, Theo, Whit, and Sherman).

We also practiced creating Mental Images in our minds as we listen to stories. One of the many stories we practiced our brain pictures with was The Gruffalo. In this story, a sneaky little mouse tricks many different forest animals into believing there is a gruffalo ready to snatch them and eat them at any moment! The mouse convinces the characters by giving great details (purple prickles on its back, a wart on its nose, etc.) We had fun drawing the picture we were creating in our brains.

We also continued to use our brain power to help us determine the meaning of unknown words by using context clues. By the end of the week, we were experts at decoding wild words that even the Minions use!

Thank you for all you do. I am excited for another week!

Week in Review!
Here are some of the ways we deepened our learning in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics.

We continued practicing our Doubles Facts.

We continued to practice retelling by writing out a summary...on the tables!

We got very into our books during Read to Buddy time.

We read several Kevin Henkes books this week to practice identifying central message:

Central Message: Wemberly was always worried. We do not need to worry! We have grown-ups who can keep us safe.

Central Message: Change can be good...and sometimes even better!

Central Message: Being brave doesn't mean you're not allowed to be scared. Being scared doesn't mean you can never be brave.

We enjoyed our "Ketchup and Mustard" time on Friday. (We spend 5-10 minutes "ketch(up)ing up on unfinished work. Any unfinished work goes home for the weekend. The "mustards" are friends who worked hard all week to keep their desks clear of unfinished work. We celebrate with a bit of free time right before recess!)

I look forward to another fun week with your first grader! :)

What did we do last week?
This past week was so much fun! From rapping, to pumpkins, to guest readers...we did it all!

We had so much fun focusing on adjectives.
To begin, we looked at our fancy adjective anchor chart and brainstormed a huge list of ways to describe objects.
We tested our skills by writing adjectives to describe a silly picture on the board.
Next, we got to test our adjective word bank by investigating pumpkins!
Ellie was thinking of a way to describe this pumpkin's weight.

Some of us wondered what our pumpkin smelled and sounded like.
Was our pumpkin bumpy or smooth? Or GREEN!
 Some pumpkins were....
a little heavier than others. :)
Then we made our own pumpkin posters full of adjectives.
Finally, we made some fun Adjective Riddles!
We started to practice retelling stories. We began the week by reading Stellaluna. We mapped our batty book as a group.
Then we got to retell the story independently on our own Stellaluna bats!

In math, we learned a pretty awesome rap to help us memorize our Doubles Facts!

We ended our week with an 8th grade guest reader! It was so fun for our first graders to listen to a big kid read aloud. :)

Thank you for letting me spend another great week with your first grader!
