Week in Review
Our focus in Language throughout this unit is Nouns! We started this week by learning that a noun can be a person, a place, or a thing. We worked as a class to create a collaborative Noun Town! (I'll have to post a picture of it when the finished product is ready!) This was a great way for students to think about the nouns they see all over Lexington.

We also created our very own Noun Trains. We discussed how Trains take people to places with their things. So, we each chose our own noun stories to put on our personalized trains.

In reading, our Wonders series focused on Community Helpers! We read about mailmen, trash collectors, fire fighters, and many other helpers in the community. To apply our understanding, the students had the opportunity to create masks and "scripts" of their potential role as a community helper!

We had fun learning about the difference between facts and opinions this week, too! We used this book:
to help us express our opinions. We had a lot of great discussion about whether we think this sneaky animal is a duck or a rabbit!

In math, we wrapped up missing addends by building our word problem equations.

Then we moved right into balancing equations and making flip-flop facts!

In first grade, students need to understand that 2+3=3+2. In addition, the numbers can commute, or travel!

We also discuss balancing equations by deciding whether number sentences are true (equal) or not true (unequal). This is always so much fun because our students finally start to understand the meaning of that equals sign!

Finally, Mrs. Rogers helped us understand the reason behind Red Ribbon Week with a cool sponge demonstration (ask your first grader about it!)

We will celebrate Red Ribbon Week all week long with fun ways to dress up!
I hope you have a FABULOUS week!
