Week in Review
Hi everyone! I hope you had a great Red Ribbon Week! I apologize that I was out at the end of the week and wanted to let you know that I will also be out at the end of this week. Have no fear - things will be back to normal by next week!

We are gearing up for another wild week at Wellington with BOOK CHARACTER DAY coming up! Book Character Day is always a hit as students get to dress up as their favorite characters and go on a parade around the building. We will also celebrate with a Junie B. Jamboree and pumpkin investigation!

Here's a short look back at the week:
We have been focusing on telling whether equations are BALANCED.
We practiced in our groups all week long.

By the end of the week, some of us were even leading the class in a fun game! In this game, the students saw only half of a balanced equation. The teacher at the board thought of a mystery way to make the equation balanced and the students had to guess the mystery way. It was such a great way to help us practice what "equal" means, as well as practice our addition facts!

In writing, we have been focusing on writing our opinions. We learned how to use the OREO method.
The OREO method is
O-Opinion
R- Reason
E - Extra reason
O - Opinion

We read some funny books this week to help us tell our opinion in response to our books.
In this story, a girl insists that she NEEDS a pair of earrings!

We then spent time talking about what we think we "need" as the perfect gift!
Here are some of our examples:

"My opinion is a Rubik's Cube. You can make it be a cube. I like solving it. They are fun to solve."

Looking for a way to make your reading at home this week more meaningful? Try asking your first grader about their OPINION of what happens in the story!

Here's another tip:

We use these 3 strategies to help us figure out tricky words in our book in class. Try asking your first grader to use these strategies instead of just "sounding it out."

Have a great week!
